Chapter 43
Introduction
In this chapter, Lao Tzu again discusses the principle that “the supple and weak can conquer the hard and strong” through this natural phenomenon: “The softest thing in the world can freely pass in and out of the hardest thing.” He expounds on the benefit of non-purposeful action (wú wéi 无为) to encourage people to model themselves on it.
Text
The softest thing in the world can freely pass in and out of the hardest thing.
Leaving no traces, the softest thing can enter that which has no spaces or cracks.
That is how I know the benefit of non-purposeful action (wú wéi).
Teaching without words and deriving benefit from non-reckless behavior,
Few people in the world can realize such a state.
