Chapter 44
Introduction
This chapter makes known the life cherishing thoughts of Lao Tzu. It guides people to value and cherish life rather than fame and fortune, and to be contented with what they have. In this way, they will live long and happy lives.
Text
Fame or one’s own body, which do you hold most dear?
One’s own body or possessions, which do you deem most important?
To gain fame and possessions while losing one’s own body or to lose fame and possessions while preserving one’s own body,
Which do you consider most harmful?
Excessively pursuing reputation will be at great cost;
Excessively accumulating possessions will certainly result in terrible loss.
Therefore, being content with what one has, one will not suffer disgrace;
Knowing how to stop in due time allows one to avoid danger;
In this way, one will live a long and happy life.
